MIKOŁAJ MAJKUSIAK

Chamber Concerto for accordion and string quartet

Mikołaj Majkusiak, a young Polish composer and accordionist, studied at the Fryderyk Chopin University of Music in Warsaw. He is one of the world’s most prominent composers writing for accordion today. Majkusiak’s music resourcefully combines the classical and the contemporary parameters. He has been awarded numerous prizes for his original, individual musical style and the enchanting energy of his sonic narrative.

The version of Chamber Concerto for accordion and string quartet (the first version is for accordion and string orchestra) was commissioned by accordionist Tadas Motiečius. It is an impetuous, fiery and at the same time enigmatic opus in five movements. The first movement (Con fuoco) is bursting with energy, the second movement (Tranquillo) projects an impression of fragility. Contrastingly virtuoso third movement (Rondo) is followed by the fourth movement (Adagio), which brings the listener into a world of nostalgia and solemnity; the dramatic solo accordion cadenza leads to the unsettling finale (Furioso).

The Lithuanian National Philharmonic Society presents an accordionist Tadas Motiečius, winner of more than 30 competitions, performing extensively in Lithuania and abroad, and the Čiurlionis Quartet.
