KRISTINA VASILIAUSKAITĖ

Chorale, Toccata and Postlude from Sinfonietta

Kristina Vasiliauskaitė is one of the most remarkable and productive women composers, whose work receives great attention not only in Lithuania, but also in foreign countries. The most important directions of her work are liturgical music (for vocal and organ), songs for choirs (mixed and equal voices, a cappella and with accompaniment), solo songs as well as symphonic and chamber-instrumental works, and music for children. One of the distinctive features of the composer’s work is a unique musical style permeated by the Lithuanian spirit. In her work one discovers transparent texture characteristic of church music, diatonic harmonies, and a romantically emotional melodies. These features are showcased in her Sinfonietta written in 1980. The composition masterfully reveals all timbral colours of the orchestra. In it the musical fabric blends in Lithuanian folk intonations, displaying exalted emotion, which is enhanced by cheerful contrasts.

In the  Lithuanian National Philharmonic  78th concert season’s opening concert the Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra conducted by maestro Modestas Pitrėnas offers Sinfonietta’s three movements: Chorale, Toccata and Postlude.
