JACQUES IBERT

Concerto for flute and orchestra

The oeuvre of French composer Jacques Ibert embraces operas, ballets, symphonic works, chamber ensembles, music for drama and films. His works combine features of neoclassicism and impressionism. The music is melodic, harmonious in form, inventive in use of rhythm and colourful instrumentation. The composer was a master of graceful, light divertissement and musical tricks.

The Concerto for flute and orchestra, composed between 1932 and 1933, was dedicated to the legendary French flutist of the time, Marcel Moyse. Despite the reduced size of the orchestra, this concerto is quite thickly textured, with fascinatingly complex harmonies and interweaving musical themes. The soloist is required to show extraordinary skill in both highly virtuosic passages and extended lyrical interludes. In this concerto, the composer has struck a delicate balance between elegiac element and effervescent musical excitement.

The young Greek flute virtuoso Stathis Karapanos performs the solo part together with the Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra conducted by the world-renowned baton maestro Christoph Eschenbach.
