ANATOLIJUS ŠENDEROVAS

Chamber Symphony (String Quartet No. 3) Premiere of the 2018 version

The music of Anatolijus Šenderovas, one of the most famous contemporary Lithuanian composers, the winner of the Lithuanian National Culture and Art Prize, stands out for its individualistic style, open emotionality, melodiousness and moderate use of modern sometimes even the most radical expression means. Thanks to his sincere music, the composer was able to conquer the heart of every listener. Written in 2015, String Quartet No. 3 is one of Šenderovas’ most subtle chamber works. It was composed on the initiative of violinist Ingrida Rupaitė-Petrikienė and dedicated to Art Vio String Quartet. According to the composer, “it is a kind of five-movement symphony for four written in the traditional quartet genre, reflecting the beauty and fragility of life”. The five movements, performed attacca, communicate longing. Lyrical episodes are complemented by contrasting rich and energetic outbursts. “It is a work that transcends the boundaries of Lithuanian music. Such a quartet can be compared with the works of the great masters of the quartet genre – Brahms, Tchaikovsky and Bartók. Extremely beautiful, incredibly expressive … ”, said the late professor Saulius Sondeckis.

The Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra, conducted by maestro David Geringas, performs the composer’s chamber orchestra version.
