GENE PRITSKER

Revisited Residue for accordion and string quartet

Gene Pritsker has been described as a serious and daringly experimental composer whose music is sometimes even described as “witty”. As Fanfare magazine says, “Anyone can draw a moustache on the Mona Lisa, but few creators can draw it as artistically and resourcefully as Pritsker”.

The composer dedicated his two-movement composition Revisited Residue to the young Serbian accordionist Miloš Katanić. “When Miloš asked me to write a composition for accordion and string quartet, I immediately thought of Residue for violin, cello, piano and drum, which I had written in the past. It had never been performed, but it kept playing in my head. I took the opportunity to recreate it and look at it again. I recycled the material from an older composition in the first movement, and for the second movement I decided to create a contrasting mood, where cluster chords and ominous textures give way to a sad, wistful melody. Both movements develop a single idea, with conflicting views and reflections”, says the composer.

The playful first movement of Revisited Residue is performed by accordion virtuoso Tadas Motiečius and the Čiurlionis Quartet.
