The French composer Claude Debussy is the most prominent figure of impressionism in music. His poetic, colourful music projects the most subtle feelings and their metamorphoses.
The composer inherited refined emotionality and aristocratic taste from the French tradition. Between 1905 and 1912 Debussy composed the symphonic triptych Images. The three pieces showcase the composer’s mastery of delicate combination of various timbres of orchestral instruments, also revealing their unique beauty. The finale of the triptych, Rondes de printemps (Round Dances of Spring), is based on folk tunes: the children’s circle dance Nous n’irons plus au bois and the lullaby Do, do l’enfant do. The score bears the composer’s epigraph: “Long live May, greet May with its wild flag”. The triptych’s finale, brimming with pellucid ambience of spring, has been described by music critics and scholars as one of Debussy’s most modern works.
Debussy’s colourful symphonic canvas is performed by the Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra led by Maestro Victorien Vanoosten.
