CAMILLE SAINT-SAËNS

Concerto for cello and orchestra No.1 in A minor, Op. 33

The instrumental concerto genre occupies an important place in the oeuvre of Camille Saint- Saëns, the famous 19th century French composer. He wrote five piano concertos, three violin concertos and two cello concertos. Saint-Saëns’s Concerto for cello and orchestra No. 1 in A minor, Op. 33, written at the age of 37, is distinguished by its superb compositional technique, playful character and spell. “In this concerto, refined French sentimentality full of musical flexibility is gracefully intertwined with inner excitement, doubts and dreams. Saint- Saëns has taken the liberty of ‘breaking’ the standard three-movement concerto form by composing a one-movement concerto in which three individual sections are united into a single work, allowing the performer to develop his musical thought in one gesture”, said Elena Daunytė, cellist, a winner of international competitions, a member of the Čiurlionis Quartet and the ensemble Regnum musicale. She performs the colourful and virtuoso solo part with the Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra conducted by Maestro Jonathan Berman.
