The late Vytautas Barkauskas was one of the most famous and prolific contemporary Lithuanian composers. In the 1960s, he was among the most active promoters of new compositional techniques and the herald of the avant-garde in Lithuania. Later, he turned towards postmodernism, striving even more strongly for emotionality, often manifesting itself in the titles of his works. His work combines emotionality and rationality, mathematical thinking, logic, and the correlation of features of compositional systems and the ideas of compelling concert-like format and recognizable genres.
One of V. Barkauskas’ best-known symphonic opuses is Konzertstück für Orchester No. 2, Op. 103. The work is dedicated to Maestro Juozas Domarkas. The opus of masterful instrumentation, form and energetic mood has graced the repertoire of the Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra for several decades. This time the orchestra is conducted by Keri-Lynn Wilson, the Canadian baton Maestra and founder of the Ukrainian Freedom Orchestra.
