Composer, conductor of extraordinary talent, and erudite Richard Strauss is considered one of the most important figures in the history of Western European music. His musical language alternates between late romanticism, expressionism and neoclassicism. R. Strauss’ name is inextricably linked to masterpieces of orchestral music. One of these is Eine Alpensinfonie (An Alpine Symphony) Op. 64, which the composer wrote while living in Bavaria, at the foot of one of the highest Alpine peaks. The 22 continuous episodes of the symphony depict a thrilling hike through the mountains, the climb to the Alpine peak and the return journey. Eine Alpensinfonie (An Alpine Symphony) musically depicts forests, birds, streams and waterfalls, meadows in full bloom, and a wide range of natural and atmospheric phenomena: thunderstorm, storm, wind, sunrise and sunset. The symphony, which begins and ends at night, can also be seen as a reflection on the life journey of the human-creator, the flights and falls of his soul, his achievements and defeats, his hopes and fears, his home and his existence.
Enchanting with its majestic peaks, R. Strauss’ symphonic score is performed by the Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra led by Victorien Vanoosten, the LNSO’s principal guest conductor.
