KRZYSZTOF PENDERECKI

Concerto for violin and orchestra No.2 Metamorphosen
(Metamorphoses)

Krzysztof Penderecki, one of Poland’s most famous and successful composers, is best known as a composer of choral and symphonic music. However, instrumental concertos also feature prominently in his oeuvre. One of these is the Concerto for violin and orchestra No. 2 Metamorphosen (Metamorphoses), which celebrates his close and long-standing professional friendship with the legendary violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter. The Second concerto is emotionally expressive, darkly melancholic musical canvas lasting 40 minutes. As the composer wrote it, he imagined he was moving in a vast labyrinth. “The concept of change is key to this work”, said Penderecki. “Few composers have demonstrated so many different colours and contradictions through their compositions. For me, this work is a physical and psychological challenge that requires my best technical skills, yet gives me tremendous musical fulfilment. His music makes us more human”, said violinist A.-S. Mutter.

Concerto for violin and orchestra No. 2 Metamorphosen (Metamorphoses) features the Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra, led by Maestro Andrzej Boreyko, and violin virtuoso Sergej Krylov.
