GEORG FRIEDRICH HÄNDEL

Concerto grosso in D minor, Op. 6 No. 10, HWV 328

Although George Frideric Handel composed some great keyboard opuses, including three cycles of concertos for harpsichord or organ, refined solo and trio sonatas, his most significant works were written for orchestra. These include overtures to operas and oratorios, two popular suites, Water Music and Music for the Royal Fireworks, and the famous ‘grand concertos’ (the concerto grosso genre is a cyclical work based on the continuous juxtaposition of a group of solo instruments with the main orchestral group), which are characterised by the individuality and ornate sound of the group of solo instruments. In 1738, the composer wrote his most masterful orchestral cycle, the 12 Concerti Grossi, Op. 6, which is considered a true gem of 18th-century baroque instrumental music. This cycle combines French overtures, fugues, English, French and Italian dances, and themes reminiscent of opera arias.

The Tenth Concerto in D minor is dramatic, full of grandeur and exaltation, with each theme and melodic flourish more beautiful than the next. The Concerto consists of five movements. The Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra, conducted by Maestro Sergej Krylov.
