GEDIMINAS GELGOTAS

The Lithuanian National Philharmonic Society presents premiere of the symphonic opus The Sarabande of Vilnius, a work by composer Gediminas Gelgotas and writer Kristina Sabaliauskaitė dedicated to the 700th anniversary of the capital city. Both creators are true Vilniusians and are the recipients of the St Christopher’s Statuette, awarded to the people who have greatly contributed to the city of Vilnius.

Sabaliauskaitė: “Music is such an abstract form of art which is capable expressing more than poetry. It can convey things and vibrations that words are powerless to convey, and it can say so much to the human soul, about the human soul. We tried to avoid being literal and tried to stay away from the established, perhaps somewhat overused imagery and symbolism of Vilnius; we have rather delved into the subconscious and the intuitive level.”

The world premiere of The Sarabande of Vilnius was performed by the Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra, the Vilnius City Municipality Choir Jauna muzika, conducted by Gediminas Gelgotas.
