FELIKSAS BAJORAS

Promise (Viltys)
for accordion and symphony orchestra

For composer Feliksas Bajoras, the music itself, its poetic origin, is more important than the stories created about it. In his opinion, the meaning of a piece of music is attained only by a free, nonpredetermined interpretation, which allows both the performer and the listener to feel the music here and now, each time perceiving it in its own, unique way.

Viltys (Promise; 2007) was the first Lithuanian work for accordion and symphony orchestra, premiered at the Gaida Festival with solo part performed by Raimundas Sviackevičius. David Wordsworth, an influential British music critic, composer and promoter of contemporary music, rated Viltys as one of the most interesting works for accordion in the world repertoire. Tadas Motiečius, who interpreted the work at the concert dedicated to the 90th anniversary of Bajoras, began his acquaintance with the composition from its title. “English word promise has several meanings, but the Lithuanian title, chosen by the composer, is Viltys, which means hopes in English. This meaning of the word was in my head for a long time, especially when I opened the score and realised that this composition is perhaps the most difficult challenge for an accordionist in the entire Lithuanian repertoire. After struggling seriously with the solo part of the piece for some time, another meaning of the promise resounded in me – pažadas, which means word of honour in English: a promise/word of honour to the composer, to the orchestra, to the audience and to myself that we will create an interesting, deep, multi-coloured musical event in the concert dedicated to the anniversary of Bajoras,” said Motiečius.
