ARVYDAS MALCYS

Concerto for Violin and String Orchestra

The works of Arvydas Malcys, one of the most prolific Lithuanian composers, have been performed in prestigious concert halls around the world, including Carnegie Hall in New York, Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow, Théâtre des Champs Élysées in Paris, Symphony Hall in Shanghai and many others.

In 2019, the Lithuanian National Philharmonic Society commissioned Malcys to write a concerto for violin and string orchestra. According to the composer, “today a variety of music can merge, come from different eras. Modernism seems to be exhausted, so time reference is no longer important. Forms and fashions are changing all the time, while passions, experiences and human content remain the same. Representing the traditional concerto genre, the work is based on the opposition of the soloist and the orchestra, which develops acoustically, texturally and emotionally. The musical characteristics of a solo part are multifaceted and multi-layered. As an axis of the whole work, it gives musical and emotional impulses. The main emotional trigger lies in rhythm, musical gestures and dynamic contrasts. The birds returning in the spring woke me up and brought about the shape and flow of the piece. This score is characterized by a peculiar plot with monologues, dialogues, allegories, climaxes, drama and lyricism. I tried to compose a concerto from many fragments that would

reflect both the possibilities of the violin and today’s cultural layer, today’s pulse, people’s hopes, dreams and fallacies.” The Concerto consists of three movements (I. Pastoral; II. Adagio; III. Solo-Tutti) performed without breaks.

Together with the Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra, conducted by maestro Vilmantas Kaliūnas, Rūta Lipinaitytė, a renowned, impressively energetic and creative Lithuanian violinist, performs a colourful and complex solo part.
