GUSTAV MAHLER – Symphony No. 10 (Unfinished), Adagio

2018-10-06

Austrian composer Mahler never completed the instrumentation of his Tenth Symphony, because he perished of blood contamination in 1911. The composer started working on it in summer of 1910 while in a cosy hut on the shore of a lake, where he enjoyed panorama of picturesque valley and mountain peaks. Idyllic environment where the composer experienced many a happy moment turned to be the witness of his personal tragedy – it was then that Mahler learned about the love affair between his wife and young architect Walter Gropius. In the margins of the sketches for the symphony he inscribed: “To live for you! To die for you! Almschi!”
