JACQUES IBERT – Divertimento for orchestra

2018-05-12

Jacques Ibert is the master of elegant, light divertimento and musical trick. Divertimento for orchestra (1930) produced from the farcical nineteenth century Labiche and Michelle play The Italian Straw Hat. Along the way, disguises, unlikely deceptions, misunderstandings, and mistaken identities propel the action to ever greater frenzy before a tidy resolution. Ibert demonstrate his parodistic talent, he masterly included elements of the blues and jazz, music hall tunes, spiky modernist dissonance, Viennese waltzes, and the Wedding March from Mendelssohn's music for A Midsummer Night's Dream.
