Estonian composer Arvo Pärt’s Berliner Messe (Berlin Mass) lends a sensitive and meditative element to the programme. It is one of the composer’s most striking works, written in a unique “tintinnabuli” (Latin – bells) technique, coined by Pärt, which is based on absolute simplicity – triads and diatonic shifts. The programme also features Morning Prayers for chamber orchestra and tape from the cycle Life without Christmas by Giya Kancheli, one of the foremost kartvelo composers of all time. The emotional score is full of fragile episodes saturated with sadness and grief. The concert’s musical intrigue is Introitus (Lithuanian – introduction) by the conductor Adrija Čepaitė. In the Roman Catholic liturgy, Introitus is the introductory hymn to the Mass. Its purpose is to proclaim the main idea of the liturgical celebration, and at the same time to call the community for prayer. Čepaitė’s restrained composition reflects the structural clarity and simplicity characteristic of the Gregorian chant genre and liturgical text, which is conveyed by the dialogue between string instruments and the singer. Domine, labia mea aperies; et os meum annuntiabit laudem tuam (“O Lord, open thou my lips; and my mouth shall shew forth thy praise”) from Psalm 50 is a text used not only in the liturgy but also in the later tradition of Western classical music. The latter expresses the fundamental intentionality of the human being to open himself to his Creator and to worship him properly.
